Robots of Ex-Yugoslavia
The Robots of Ex-Yugoslavia project emerged at the intersection of analogue architectural photography and computational art.
It started with a road trip round Bosnia and Serbia in 2021 where I photographed monuments and spaces on analogue film with a Mamiya RB67 medium format camera. This involved spontaneous road-side stops as well as more intentional endeavours such as hiking up a disused Olympic ski jump! For the design element I ran an edge bundling algorithm* over 3D models in Houdini to generate the robotic forms which would inhabit the architectural spaces. These were combined in Photoshop to create the final imagery.
These pieces were exhibited in a collaborative exhibition with printmaker Francis Hardy at The Hive Studio, Cambridge, 2022. Together we explored how the experience of colour, texture and theme could draw together the desperate mediums of printmaking and computational art
